Course Summary
A one day course for user experience professionals on the key elements you need to consider to convert an existing content based site to become responsive with a fantastic user experience
Limited Number of Places for Small Group Size
To provide the best quality training, we offer workshops with small group sizes so that each and every participant can get the individual support they need
Save a Huge Amount of Time
The main aim of this course is to save you time. You could spend weeks trying to work out which patterns you should adopt to create a great responsive website, or come on this course if you would like to find out in a day.
No Developer Skills Required...
We will explain in plain English what is happening under the hood to make a site responsive.
...But Great for Web Front-End Developers Too!
Front end developers are going to find this course fantastic to help decide what to build. But it is not a how-to course. You can work out for yourself how to build responsive sites using Ethan Marcotte's book on Responsive Web Design and using the great resources that exist out there on the web. The course will include the basics of coding a responsive site, and sample materials built using HTML5, CSS3 and JQuery, but it is not a coding course. The reality is that the problems with responsive sites are not with how to build them - this developer techniques all well-known - the problem is knowing what to build, the patterns to use, the best practices. That is what this course is all about.

What the Course Covers
The Responsive Triangle
You may have heard of the Project Management Triangle. We will tell you about the Responsive Triangle - what it is that you will have to sacrifice if you want to create a website which is both responsive and a great user experience...
The Four Responsive Myths
Find out the Responsive Myths are. This is where you are told that a responsive website has to be this or a responsive website has to be that, when it doesn't have to be at all.
A lot of these myths come from developers who like to develop in a certain way, and are saying that responsive websites must be built in their way. However, the problems with many of these techniques is they only work on very small websites and aren't scalable to sites with sub-branding and more than two levels of navigation.
Canvases in the Responsive World
A lot of web developers are giving canvases a bad name, we give you a more pragmatic approach which doesn't throw away the baby with the bathwater
The Twenty (Worst) Responsive Anti-patterns
An Anti-Pattern is a pattern which people think is a good idea, but is actually a bad idea. There are many patterns which people are using for responsive websites which create a terrible user experience. There are three main causes of this.
· Patterns based on desktop patterns which don't work on mobile devices.
· Patterns based on native smartphone apps which are not appropriate on a mobile website
· Developers show-boating their JavaScript, CSS3 and HTML5 skills
On the course, you will find out what these hideous patterns are, and what you should be doing instead.
Responsive Best Practices
A list of the best practices that matter. There a great document on mobile best practices, but it is a massive checklist of everything you should do. We will concentrate on the ones that matter for creating responsive websites.
User Experience Patterns Which Actually Work
There are masses of ideas for creating responsive websites being published. We will only be spending time on ones that actually work and which are important.

The Rules of Information Architecture Have Changed
Web navigation is changing. The way we used to build navigation only worked because there was plenty of screen space. From now on, we need to build web navigation the right way so that responsive websites can be built without hacks. On the course, you will learn about the new rules of web navigation design. The great thing about the new rules is they will make your desktop sites more usable and help improve your conversion rate, because information architecture for responsive websites helps to cut the clutter which weighs down many modern large-scale sites.
How do you do all of this in one day?
As it is a one day course, we have to proriotise user experience patterns and prototyping. We won't be spending much time on technical implementation (you can do that in your own time afterwards, there are tons of resources and books out there, and we'll point you in the right direction).
At the end of the course, you will know:
· What's important and what's not important
· The best patterns for creating a fantastic Responsive User Experience
Because we only have one day, the scope will be limited:
· We will focus on a marketing site for the case study used in the course. However, the same techniques can be applied to e-commerce sites and intranets, and the tutor can answer specific questions you have on these types of site.
· We will focus on smaller sites. The challenges of information architecture for large-scale mult-branded and deep navigation sites will be the subject of a separate course in the future. However, the tutor will have time to answer specific information architecture questions which participants bring to the course.
And there's free stuff too!
Free Resource Pack - Only for People Attending the Training
The resource pack is a specially written document which includes all the essential information you need to procuce great responsive. It includes key points from the workshop and links to resources. Because it is specially written, it only includes the information you need, so it is a great quick reference for participants and won't take up much space.
